Natural skin care

If you are reading this article, you probably have a bone to pick with major skin care and cosmetic companies, whom you think might be manufacturing products that are environmentally unfriendly or being tested on animals. Below, you will find my compilation of some of the best natural skincare remedies that you will find on the web.

However, before I present them to you, I would like to say that cosmetic companies and skincare companies have come a long way since the days they were blamed for animal cruelty and use of chemicals that pollute the environment.

Nowadays, the good cosmetic companies are completely eco-friendly and never test their products on animals. Some do it to comply with the law while some do it voluntarily. The bottom line is that modern day cosmetic companies are not the evil companies that you might have pictured in your mind.

Anyways, coming back to my compilation of natural home remedies for skincare, I have listed some of the best home remedies below.

Bananas

As a moisturizer – Mash a couple of bananas into pulp and add enough milk to make a paste that will have the texture of store bought moisturizers. Apply this to your skin and leave on for about an hour or two. This is an excellent moisturizer that will rehydrate your skin and also make it very soft to the touch. It can be used for the body and facial skin.

For really dry and cracked skin – If you have skin that has suffered extensive damage due to dryness, sun damage or dehydration, you can always mix in banana pulp with honey and milk and then apply it on the affected area.

After leaving on the application for about half an hour, the skin will become instantly smoother, softer and more supple. For maximum results, apply the paste and cover with a thin plastic sheet, to make sure that the pulp is absorbed well into the skin.

Acne / Pimple treatments – Bananas  are very versatile as a skin care product as they can even be used for acne. Take a banana and mash it up. To it, add just a touch of nutmeg and about  table spoon of milk and oatmeal. Blend this mixture and apply it on your face, until it dries. Rinse away when dry. The antibacterial properties of the nutmeg and the banana will eliminate bacteria from your skin pores while the oatmeal will act as a exfoliating agent.

Anti aging – Bananas, when used as a standalone product, have potent anti aging properties. Bananas contain several vitamins that increase the production of natural collagen in your skin, thereby helping you fight off some age related skin blemishes.

Honey

Toner – Honey is probably the most versatile and powerful home ingredient for natural skin care. To use honey as a toner, puree in one small cucumber with two tea spoons of honey. Use a cotton pad to apply this on your face and leave it on until it dries. You can do this twice a day and store away the natural toner in your refrigerator. You will notice that your skin becomes more taut and elastic.

Face scrub – Honey with oatmeal is probably the best natural scrubber there is. Use about a tablespoon of honey with 2 tablespoons of oatmeal. To this, add in some lemon juice and 1 tablespoon of almonds that are finely ground. Use this mixture to slowly massage your face, in gentle circles. The honey and the oatmeal will exfoliate your skin while the almonds will make it softer, giving you an instantly brighter face that is also soft to the touch.

Cleanser – Working will honey can often leave quite a mess. However, if you want a easy to use, non-messy cleanser that uses honey, you can simply mix in about a quarter cup of honey with about half a cup of glycerin. To this, add in about a tablespoon of your liquid soap that is gentle enough for use on the face. Use a sponge to gently scrub your face with this solution and then rinse off with warm water. It is an excellent daily cleanser.

Papaya

Papaya is an excellent fruit to exploit as skin care ingredient. A papaya mask can do wonders for your facial skin. It contains several vitamins and ingredients that can cleanse, detoxify and even brighten your skin.

Facial mask – To use papaya as a facial mask, simply remove the skin and seeds of the papaya fruit and puree it up in a blender. Then, you can simply apply the puree on your face and neck and allow it to dry.

Skin brightening – You can also add in lemon juice to your papaya mask to enhance the skin lightening or brightening effect.

Exfoliating – To use papaya as a skin exfoliating mask, add in some oat meal, lime and a couple of egg whites into the mixture. You can also use papaya with honey, when you whip up your exfoliating papaya mask.

Brown sugar body scrub

If you want a natural scrubber that you can use all over your body, it doesn’t get better than a brown sugar body scrub. Mix in about 2 cups of brown sugar, the organic kind if possible, with about half a cup of natural sugar. To this, add in about 1 tablespoon of almond oil.

You can also optionally add in a few drops of vanilla essence if you want to make the scrub scented. Mix these ingredients in and use it to gently scrub away all of your bodily skin and then rinse off in a warm shower. You will feel that your bodily skin has got a new lease of life.

Tomato face mask for tired and stressed out facial skin

This is a mask that can give your tired facial skin an instant boost. Use about half a tomato, with the skin off, to add to a mixture of oatmeal (2 teaspoons), yoghurt (2 teaspoons) and a little bit of cucumber in a grated form. Use this mask to apply on your facial skin and leave it on for about 15-30 minutes, or until dry. Rinse off with warm water to reveal an instantly brightened face.

Spot treatment of acne, with cinnamon

Have you got an ugly acne spot that popped up overnight. Use two tablespoons of organic honey that is combined with cinnamon powder to make a paste like solution. Dab this mixture on the acne spot and leave on for about 20-30 minutes. When you rinse off the paste, you will notice that the acne spot is greatly subdued. In some cases, it might have even vanished!

Lemon mint face toner, ideal for use in the summer

The summer months can really take a toll on your delicate facial skin. Use a lemon-mint toner to revitalize your dull looking facial skin. Use about a tablespoon of lemon juice with about half a cup of witch hazel.

Then, pour in about a cup of hot water and throw in a peppermint tea bag, and let sit for a while. Once the peppermint bag has soaked for a while, remove the bag and allow the mixture to cool for a little bit. Use the solution as a toning mask for about 15-20 minutes.

You can even store away this natural toner in the refrigerator, for use until it empties.
